Broken Hill (3)

The City of Broken Hill is the largest regional centre in the western half of New South Wales. It lies in the centre of the sparsely settled New South Wales Outback, close to the South Australian border and midway between the Queensland and Victorian borders. The nearest large population centre is Mildura in Victoria, three hundred kilometres distant to the south on the Murray River. The nearest large city is Adelaide, capital of South Australia, approximately 500 kilometres to the southwest. Because of its location Broken Hill has strong cultural and historical connections with South Australia and operates on Central Australian Time, one half hour behind Eastern Standard Time.

Not much high-rise there! I did not know all that geographical info, nor that they were on Central time. I am finding it hard to take advantage of the el-cheapo fares in this round of flights, because the tour companies have not released their 2011 dates as yet.

I don't think anything goes above 2 stories here. It looks bigger than it's 19,000 population - we like to be spread out! I've lived in Broken Hill since 2005 and I love it here. An interesting fact - many Broken Hill people are convinced that we're in SA. Going down to Mildura is often called "going to the river" or "midura" and if you're travelling to Adelaide, you'd say "we're gunna t'Adelaide". Hope you're enjoying it :)
